Admissions

Admission Arrangements

Parents and children are most welcome to visit and see our school. Visits are often most informative during the school day, when you can see our children learning. Please call the office to book an appointment.

Children are admitted into Foundation in one intake in September. In the summer term prior to your child starting school, we will arrange taster sessions and you and your child can meet the teachers, teaching assistants and office staff.

We are a church school however our school is for all families in our community. We fully include children with a diverse range of faiths and children with no faith. Our worship times are invitational and inclusive for all.

Consultation for our 2027-2028 policy

Please see this letter about a consultation on a proposal to reduce our admission number from 45 to 30 children in each year group, starting from the Reception intake of the 2027–2028 school year. Also see our proposed admissions policy for 2027-28.

A message from Mrs Dean, Mrs Leatherbarrow and Canon Julian regarding the proposed change to our admissions numbers for September 2027:

Over the last few years, we’ve had between 32 and 36 children joining us in Reception each September. This has been a tricky number — a bit too many for one class, but not quite enough to fit well with our current mixed-age class structure. There is also a serious financial implication in the long term if we have to plan for an intake of 45, but continue as predicted with a lower intake.

Moving to an intake of 30 children each year would mean we have one class per year group, which would help us to be more sustainable and better resourced per child in the long term, both financially and in how we organise our teaching and support for children.

Looking ahead, local data from the council shows that the number of primary-aged children in the area is expected to reduce further. Because we’re based in the heart of Spondon, many families moving into any new housing developments are likely to be closer to other local schools.

Reducing our admission number would also give us the opportunity to consider adding a nursery at St Werburgh’s in the future.

Please take a look at the attached letter for more details and information on how to share your thoughts as part of the consultation.

Please don't hesitate to come and speak to any of us if you have any thoughts or questions about this.

Kind regards,

Mrs Dean, Mrs Leatherbarrow and Canon Julian
