Art
At St. Werburgh’s we believe, as Pablo Picasso famously summed up, “Every child is an artist.”
Art is an ongoing process through which all children are given opportunities to develop specific skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to work in a variety of media, style and form. It enables children of all abilities to use their creative imagination to achieve their potential with guidance and given criteria. Children work individually and within a group to develop social and personal skills.
Our Art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of Art and Design through the following areas:
- Drawing
- Painting
- Craft and design
- Materials and techniques
- Generating ideas
- Evaluation
The curriculum also builds progression in art skills that encompass the use of the following formal elements of art:
- Line
- Form
- Pattern
- Colour
- Shape
- Tone
- Texture
At St.Werburgh’s we recognise that within art there should be less focus on outcome and a greater focus on the creative journey. When we work towards a predefined, prescribed outcome the understanding and learning of pupils can be compromised. Ofsted recognises that work which looks great at first glance can hide poor learning outcomes. Instead, at St. Werburgh’s, we work to create confident, independent artists who can articulate and value their own creative journeys.
