At St Werburgh’s C of E Primary School we aim to empower children to act and think as historians through our high quality and exciting curriculum. By nourishing their aspirations and helping them to understand how they can be agents of change, we can help children to positively influence their future both in their local community and the wider world. We aim to inspire children to develop their knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world, whilst building historical skills to help understand and enact positive change in our world.

Our exciting and progressive History curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their curiosity, encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to have a better understanding of the society in which they live and that of the wider world. At the core of our teaching it is our wish to spark children’s love of history. 

• Offer a high quality, exciting and progressive curriculum with knowledge and concepts that challenge children and inspire curiosity.
• Use primary and secondary sources and understand their differences, usefulness and accuracy in retelling the past.
• Encourage pupils to become critical and analytical thinkers, differentiating between historical sources and how interpretations in History may differ.
• Encourage high expectations; maximising their motivation to continue to study history.
• Enable pupils to develop knowledge and skills to become life-long researchers.
• Enable all pupils to make positive contributions by comparing historical events and how this can help to inform a better future for all.

We encourage children to work collaboratively thus helping them to understand the power of collaboration to solve problems. At St Werburgh’s we believe that children learn from experiences both in the classroom and through educational visits to enrich their learning.

We also aim to provide children with opportunities to develop their SMSC skills such as:

• A sense of identity through learning about the past.
• Develop skills of empathy and understanding.
• An appreciation of how we got here today.
• A sense of enjoyment of learning about themselves and the world around them.
• Recognising the difference between right and wrong and apply this to their own lives.
• An appreciation of a wide range of cultural influences have helped to shape their heritage and that of others.
• An interest of investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues, and the ability to understand and appreciate the views of others.
• An acceptance and understanding of British values.
• Develop a cultural awareness of others from different times and places, therefore promoting equality for all.
